How to Become a Police Officer in Las Vegas

The recruitment officers within the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s organize several events that encourage interested applicants to prepare for a career in law enforcement. These events include employment seminars, symposiums, one-on-one meetings, and visiting special interest groups. Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age by the time of the 1st test
  • Must have U.S. citizenship
  • Have a high school diploma or GED

Potential Dis-qualifiers

  • A felony conviction is an automatic dis-qualifier
  • Two DUI convictions is also an automatic dis-qualifier
  • Individuals with a domestic violence or a domestic assault conviction will be disqualified from any position that requires that person to carry a firearm

Step1: Personal History Questionnaire

All applicants will fill out this background questionnaire form that basically asks you about your personal life and experiences, it has a total of 169 multiple choice questions. The results of this will be known immediately after you take it and qualified individuals will be scheduled for the written exam.

Step 2: Written Exam

This test will assess factors that are essential to become successful as a police recruit and these include written communication skills, observation and memory skills, reading comprehension and non-cognitive skills. A 70% score is required to pass this examination and individuals who successfully passed this test will then move on to the physical fitness test.

Step 3: Physical Fitness Test

  • Has to be able to produce 80 pounds of pressure with each hand in the Jamar Grip Strength test
  • Do 15 cycles of the bend, twist and touch within 20 seconds
  • Complete a 100 yard run in 19 seconds or less
  • Complete 24 push ups (no time limit)
  • Complete 32 sit ups within a minute
  • Finish a one mile run within 10 minutes and 49 seconds

Step 4: The Oral Board

A panel of three will evaluate the applicant’s oral communication skills and overall potential as a law enforcement officer. This panel will consist of one supervisory level commissioned officer and two commissioned officers.

Step 5: Eligibility List and Civil Service Board Approval

Applicants who’ve successfully passed the written exam, physical fitness test and the oral board will be placed and ranked in this list according to their scores. During this time a background investigation will be commenced and the top candidates will be notified and will receive a conditional offer of employment.

Step 6: Background Investigation

The background investigation has 5 stages in it all designed to check the mental, physical and moral values of the applicant:

  1. Background interview
  2. Written psychological test
  3. Oral psychological test
  4. Polygraph exam
  5. Medical examination

Step 7

Final step in becoming a police officer in Las Vegas involves a final review were a selection committee will review background history, psychological and polygraph test of all the potential candidates to determine who are the most qualified. These individuals will receive a final offer of employment and will have to take another physical fitness test prior to being admitted in the academy.

Pre-Academy Test

  • Have a vertical jump of at least 11.5 inches
  • Complete the agility run in 23.4 seconds or less
  • Do 18 push ups (no time limit)
  • Do 24 sit ups within a minute
  • Complete a 300 meter run within 82 seconds
  • Complete a 1.5 mile run within 20 minutes and 20 seconds
