How to Become a Police Officer in Houston

Minimum Qualifications in Becoming a Cop in Houston

  • Between 20 and a half and 44 years old, applicants have to be at least 21 and not over 45 years of age prior to appointment.
  • A U.S. citizen
  • Has to be a resident and have been employed within the greater Houston area
  • Have a valid driver’s license and proof of liability insurance
  • A good driving record

Academic and / or Employment Requirements

  • Should have complete 48 semester hours from an accredited college or university with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 or…
  • At least 2 years of active duty in the military with an honorable discharge or…
  • Have completed at least 5 years of work experience as a TCLEOSE or a similar institution

Potential Dis-qualifiers

  • A misdemeanor or felony conviction
  • Applicants with monocular vision
  • Uncontrolled seizures
  • Applicants with diabetes mellitus

Vision Requirements

  • Uncorrected visual acuity of no less than 20/200 correctable to 20/20
  • Should be able to distinguish the full color spectrum through the Farnsworth D-15 color vision test

Hearing Requirements

  • No hearing loss above 30 decibels
  • Hearing aids will be allowed as long as it is self contained and fit behind or over the ear, applicants with hearing aids will be tested for the same hearing acuity similar to candidates without hearing aids

Quick Overview on the Application Process

  1. Apply online then submit all required documents in person at the HPD Recruiting Office located in 1219 Miliam, Houston, Texas 77002
  2. Take the reading comprehension test and schedule for an interview
  3. Take the physical agility test (details below)
  4. Undergo a background investigation
  5. Take the psychological and medical examination
  6. Final review for qualified candidates and appointment by the chief of police

Physical Agility Test

Applicants will need to pass every event in this test to be able to move forward, before participating individuals are required to complete and sign a test self-evaluation form.

  • Complete a mile and a half run in 17 minutes and 30 seconds or less
  • Complete a 300 meter sprint in78 seconds or less
  • Jump at least 16.5 inches on the vertical jump test
  • Complete 15 push ups
  • Complete the agility run in 20 seconds
  • Be able to do 6 successful trigger pulls on each hand

Houston Police Academy

All qualified trainees goes through a military style training in the Houston Police Academy, this boot camp style course will last for roughly six months, and though participants are not required to live there, they are required to go back and forth each training day from Monday to Friday.

Because of the difficulty of this training program, participating individuals are not allowed to have a job or attend other classes during the duration of the academy. Academy is located at 17000 Aldine Westfield Road, Houston Texas.

Field Training

After successfully completing the academy all officers will be in probationary status for 6 months, during this time they’ll be going through Field Training with a seasoned officer as their FTO (Field Training Officer) for 12 to 16 weeks.
