How to Become a Detroit Police Officer

The very first step to becoming a cop in Detroit is getting a Detroit Police Department (DPD) interest card which is available from a Detroit police station or from the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building located at 2 Woodward Ave., Detroit, Michigan, 48226. After filling out the interest card, send it back and you’ll receive an information package which includes the overview of the MCOLES Exam and the list of documents that is required for the application process.

But first, let us see if you are qualified to become a police officer in Detroit…

Minimum Qualifications to Become a Cop in Detroit

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license
  • A high school diploma or GED
  • Cannot have a felony conviction on record even it is expunged

Vision Requirements

  • Visual acuity must be 20/20 or has to be corrected to 20/20
  • Normal color vision and depth perception

The M.C.O.L.E.S. Pre Employment Examination

All law enforcement applicants will have to take and pass this exam, take note that a $62.00 fee will be charged prior to taking this test which can be paid through a debit or a credit card. Just in case you aren’t able to pay via a credit or debit card you can call 1-877-422-4092 to talk about your  payment options. 

This test will consist of 120 multiple choice questions, half or which will assess writing skills and the other half will assess reading comprehension. Results of this exam will be sent through snail mail or by a phone call, you will also be notified for the schedule of the pre-screening interview.

After the pre-screening interview, candidates will have their criminal history and driving records checked. During this period you will also find out the result of your pre-screening interview, if you’ve passed you will be notified of the application orientation schedule, if not you will be notified the reason for disqualification.

Application Orientation

This event will last for around a couple of hours. Participants will receive their application package and assigned a background interview date as well as get information about the upcoming M.C.O.L.E.S. physical agility test. It is important to note that the $45.00 fee  for this test will be waived (one time only) and applicants will need to pass this test in no less than 30 days prior to the background interview date.

M.C.O.L.E.S. Physical Fitness Test

  • Vertical jump
  • Sit ups
  • Push ups
  • Half mile run
Subsequent steps include a background interview and a final oral board assessment were qualified candidates will receive a conditional offer of employment. Candidates will then go through a psychological test then take a pre-employment exam. If successful during this stage, candidates will receive an acceptance letter along with the date of final orientation. At this point they are hired by the DPD.

The Detroit Police Academy

All hired trainees will then go through a 19-week long (or 562 hours) academy course were they will have to maintain an overall score of 70% to qualify and take the M.C.O.L.E.S. Final Certification Exam. The academy program includes the following:

  • Practical precision driving
  • Criminal and law procedures
  • Physical conditioning and training
  • Defensive tactics training program
  • Firearms training
  • First aid

Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards Final Certification Examination

This is the final examination officer’s must take and pass to get certified as a cop in Detroit, it will consist of 200 multiple choice questions and will last three and a half hours.
