Becoming a State Trooper in Wyoming

Individuals interested to become a state trooper in Wyoming have two options to apply. First option would be to send their application to the Human Resources Division located at 2001 Capitol Avenue Cheyenne, Wyoming with postal code 82002-0060. Second option would be applying online through their website.

Minimum Qualifications to Become a State Trooper in Wyoming

  • Must be at least 23 years of age on or before the date of the entrance test
  • A high school diploma or GED
  • Two years of actual working experience with the public
  • Must have American citizenship
  • Has to complete all entry level exams

Potential Dis-qualifiers

  • A criminal offense conviction
  • A revocation, suspension, denial or disqualification of a driver’s license within 3 years prior to the date of application
  • Any record of preventable car accidents or a moving traffic violation conviction

Vision Requirements

  • Candidates must have a visual acuity of at least 20/20 on each eye that has to be corrected to at least 20/20
  • Individuals with a visual acuity of over 20/100 must be corrected to 20/20 through the use of soft contact lenses (Eye glasses or hard contact lenses are not allowed in this case)
  • Individuals with a visual acuity between 20/100 and 20/20 must be corrected to 20/20 through the use of a hard or soft contact lens or glasses
  • Candidates who wear contact lenses must do so six months prior to being appointed to the recruit school
  • Candidates who plan to or have successfully gone through lasik eye surgery must do so six months prior to being appointed to recruit school

Physical Agility Test

During this test, participants are advised to bring appropriate gear for this event such as sweat pants, running shoes or t-shirts. This test will be divided into 7 different events with a 5 minute rest in between the 4th and 5th events and another 5 minute rest between the 5th and 6th event. A 30 minute rest is also given prior to the last event which is the 1.5 mile run.

  1. Complete the agility run within 18.3 seconds
  2. Do one bench press (the weight will be 68% of your body weight)
  3. Have a 16 inch vertical jump (you’ll have 3 attempts for this)
  4. Complete a 300 meter run within 61 seconds
  5. Do at least 30 push ups
  6. Do 34 sit ups within a minute
  7. Complete a 1.5 mile run within 14 minutes and 54 seconds

P.O.S.T. Exam

Every aspiring state trooper in Wyoming has to take this test, take note that you’ll have to pay a $35 (cash only) test fee in order to take the test. The test will be split into four sections that includes:

  • Written skills
  • Math
  • Reading comprehension
  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling
In order to pass the P.O.S.T exam, you have to score at least 70% in each of the four sections. The test results will remain valid for one year from the date of the test.

Wyoming Highway Patrol Recruit Academy

Qualified trainees who passed all the required tests will then go to the WLEA Basic Academy. This course will last for 13 weeks, 12 weeks of which will be spent on basic training after which successful officers will be certified and be assigned to a station where they will undergo field training for 50 working days. All training expenditures in the academy will be funded by the state of Wyoming as well as all the equipment, food and lodging.
