Lets Quickly Review the Basic Qualifications to Become a Police Officer in Nashville

  • Must be at least 21 years of age (individuals may apply 2 months prior to their 21st birthday)
  • Has a Class D driver’s license
  • Has to be a U.S. citizen
  • Former military personnel must have an honorable discharge from the armed forces
  • Must pass all the standards set by the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission

Academic And / Or Employment Experience

  • Must have completed at least 60 hours (or 2 years) of academic studies from an accredited college or university with a GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (hours for remedial classes will not be counted) or…
  • Have a high school diploma (or GED) AND completed at least 2 years of active military duty with an honorable discharge or…
  • Have a high school diploma or GED plus a minimum of 2 years as a certified full time law enforcement officer in a patrol capacity from the Tennessee P.O.S.T. or an equivalent state certification board
  • Have a high school diploma or GED plus a minimum of 5 years (40 hours / week) of full time work experience

Potential Dis-qualifiers

  • A felony conviction
  • A conviction or a guilty plea to any violation of state or federal laws related to force, violence, dishonesty, theft, gambling, liquor or illegal drugs
  • Multiple driving offenses and / or chargeable accidents
  • Marijuana use within 2 years of the date of application
  • Illegal drug use within 7 years of the date of application
  • Previously involved in drug trafficking

Vision Requirements

  • Applicants must posses an uncorrected visual acuity of no worse than 20/100 and a corrected visual acuity of 20/20 on the better eye and 20/30 on the other eye.
  • Binocular vision has to be at around 20 feet
  • Must possess normal color vision

Physical Abilities Test

This exam will be split into four separate events:

  • Do 15 or more sit ups within a minute
  • Do 25 push ups – this is not timed
  • Complete a 300 meter run within 77 seconds
  • Complete a 1.5 mile run within 17 minutes and 77 seconds

Take note that applicants MUST pass all four events to successfully complete this test.

Civil Service Exam Information

All applicants will have to take the Civil Service Exam, this exam will have three sections and take around 4 hours to complete.

  • Human relations (multiple choice questions)
  • Reading (multiple choice questions)
  • Report writing

The first 2 sections will be a video based exam, the third will be a written exam.

Once the applicant passes both the Physical Ability Test and Civil Service Exam, they will then go through a background investigation then subsequently an interview (if the candidate passes the background investigation). A conditional employment offer will be given to individuals who successfully completed both the background investigation and interview process were they will go through a series of tests such as a medical exam, drug screening, psychological tests, and the computer voice stress analysis.
