Becoming a Police Officer in Memphis, Tennessee

MPD Applicants who live within 80 miles of Memphis are required to submit their application forms to the Memphis Police Department Training Academy which is located at 4371 O.K. Robertson road, applicants who live 80 or miles from Memphis can download the police officer application online at the website or apply online.

Application forms are available in all Memphis police precincts or in the Criminal Justice Center.

Minimum Qualifications to Become a Police Officer in Memphis

  • At least 21 years of age (there is no maximum age requirement)
  • A valid driver’s license and with that a good driving record
  • A U.S. citizen
  • Honorable discharge from the military
  • Not been convicted of any crime related to theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or illegal substances
  • No felony convictions on record

Academic And / Or Employment Experience

  • At least 54 trimester hours from an accredited college or university or…
  • Two (2) years of active duty (uninterrupted) in the military with an honorable discharge or…
  • Three (3) years of continuous employment as a certified peace officer in a police department with at least 20 officers.

Test Requirements

  • Complete a 1.5 mile run within 15 minutes
  • Complete a series of  Entry Testing that includes the Reading Test, Entry Level Police Test, Problem Solving Assessments
  • Physical Agility Test
  • Background Investigation
  • Psychological Test
  • Medical Test

Training at the Memphis Police Academy

All qualified applicants will go through an extensive 21-week training in the Memphis Police Academy, during this period trainees will receive a salary as a recruit police officer.

Training in the academy will include the following:

  • Criminal law
  • Report writing
  • Investigation principles
  • Defensive tactics
  • How to operate a police vehicle
  • Weapons training

Upon completion of academy training, all officers will be assigned to one of the precincts where in the next 12 months, he / she will apply what they’ve learned in the academy in the real world under the supervision of a Field Training Officer.

Final Fitness Test

The physical exam will consist of 6 events:

  • Complete the 1.5 mile run within 13 minutes and 14 seconds
  • Do at least 40 push ups within a minute
  • Do at least 40 sit ups within a minute
  • Must possess at least a 20 inch vertical leap
  • Complete 300 meter run within 55.6 seconds
  • Complete the Illinois agility run within17 seconds

Trainees will have to pass all six events with at least a 70th percentile score or above. The final fitness test represents 25% of the recruit’s overall class ranking.
